How to Change the Look and Feel of Your Windows 10 Desktop

Follow this method to change the look and feel of Windows, and your computer will become a more vibrant place once you've done it.

1. Set New Desktop Wallpaper and Lock Screen Background

One of the easiest ways to give your desktop a new look is to choose a desktop wallpaper that suits your interests. To do this, open the Settings app (using the Win + I keyboard shortcut is a convenient way) and go to the Personalization section.

Here, on the Background tab, you'll find several options related to your desktop wallpaper. In the drop-down box under Background, select Picture if you want to use one image. Press the Browse button below to select an image from your PC. Check out some great sites to find new wallpapers if you need an idea.

If you want to go beyond static images, select the Slideshow option for your desktop wallpaper. Select the full folder of images on your computer, and Windows will change it at the interval you set.

At the bottom, you can choose how your image gets into the screen if the size isn't right. If you're not sure, Fill usually gives the best results.

2. Paint Windows With Your Favorite Colors

Still in the Personalization Settings window, open the Colors tab for other easy Windows customization options. Select your favorite color from the grid to apply that color across Windows.

If you don't like any standard colors, go to Custom colors for more detailed controls. For a more cohesive look, you can check Automatically select accent colors from my background and Windows will set the colors based on your wallpaper.

After you select one, check the two boxes under Show accent colors on the following surfaces to apply them to the app title bar, as well as Windows elements such as the taskbar and Start menu.

3. Set Account Image

A generic gray silhouette representing your Windows 10 user account outside the boring box. You can personalize your account with custom photos, which are very useful on multi-user systems.

To do so, visit Your Account > Settings > Info. Under Create your images, you can select Camera to take new photos with your webcam, or Browse to upload images from your PC.

Once set, you'll see this icon in several places around the Windows interface. This makes your computer aesthetic feel a little more personal, as the default profile icon isn't fun.

4. Revise start menu

Chances are you often use the Start menu to launch programs and search for your files. To simplify it, you'll need to remove junk tiles and apps you don't care about.

Next, you can make the Start menu more useful by dragging the apps you're actually using from the list to the tile area on the right. It acts as a shortcut, and apps with Live Tiles can even update new information in real time (similar to widgets on Android and iOS).

While you're in the Start menu, you should also take the time to remove Windows 10 bloatware. This will make the essential elements of your desktop look great.

5. Make Windows 10 Look Really Cool With Rainmeter

There is no discussion of how to make Windows 10 look complete without mentioning Rainmeter. It's the best desktop customization tool, and perfect for advanced users who aren't satisfied with what we've covered above.
